‘The Lost Fruits’ is a story of infusions, languages borrowed from other stars; an oasis perhaps, where memories gather. Flavours untasted since the first garden; fruits that would be poisonous to the apes of another world, fruits that cluster and fruits that shoot-forth new trees.
Biodiversity is being lost, piece-by-piece. Now only the imagination can savour the lost fruits of a pre-globalised past.

Looking out from the intimacy of a glade the idea of emergence appears. Positioned between the trees, the painter hovers between out and in, reading what’s written in the leaves and on the ground. The composition blends meaning and myth, and the vision closes at the touch of a thorn.

An abstract representation of the painter/alchemist reassembling forgotten moments. The cleansing stream, the whispering from above; the thunder, the rain.
Painting is a chance to redeem language of its limitations – words are broken down to a substance that flows, and from that mingling a language ring is formed, enclosing the poem of the heart.
Active imagining through visions is a way of making sense of primal chaos, which exists, even now, at the foundation of existence. It is held by the roots of the mythic tree, which bears the leaves and flowers of life and consciousness.
Alchemy: The Poetry of Matter
In alchemical philosophy, CITRINITAS stood for the dawning of the solar light inherent in one's being, a light which magically transforms the shadowy subconscious into valuable consciousness. It is a "yellowing" process, one of the four major stages of the alchemical magnum opus.

The tears of the forest are my tears, rising and falling, never the same; reflections of things that made me cry. I paint the forest yet see myself everywhere – torn limbs, sprays of rejoicing leaves, canopies riven by stars. Deeper down, life sleeps, waiting for the signals of the sun – the sun that has been acting so strangely lately. I paint the trees yet see myself reflected – the hollows and cavities, the deep stirrings – and high above, fading celebrations and fleeting trepidations.

Rain, towering through trees
wets the captive atmosphere of the night
so that veins in the stone conduct presence
to the edge of earliest life where the
dissolved and the crystallized
barely escape from the mouth of the ground.
A tiny drip, a tail -
seen through the slit of a serpents eye.
A room resting in a vast bed of purple cloud
hoses me with a tip made of red hot diamonds.
I glow -
making a wing
out of what must have been a deep, fatal fin
black enough to pierce a cage
bleached not by me
but by a dream of what is not me…
Like a bird flowed of feathers
sunshine grew
hiding from a raven-field sheath
knife-tips held between blades that cut the sky
insulating lucid yet inconceivable shadows.

The sea,
That old acidic curve at my right side,
curing its loudness in the strata’s of distant stone,

on which I cast a transparent wing of presence -
A passing shadow over shifting drifts of trailing sand.

“Enclosed by the serpent of the tides, the dark matter presides”.
Coniunctio is the union of divine or spiritual energies with earthly energies. The alchemists professed to a transformation between fire and water, which they regarded as baptism. In seawater baptism, as the liquid evaporates from the body, the salt (symbol of wisdom) remains - regeneration in sea-water. Psychologically the process corresponds to the conscious realization and integration of the unconscious. The symbols presented ultimately describe a psychic rather than a physical reality.

NOTES: The analytic psychologist Carl Jung suggested the term mysterium coniunctionis (Latin: “mystery of the conjunction”) as a designation for mystical paradoxes. Mystics who conceptualize a mysterium coniunctionis find it difficult to express the paradox in words, both in their own thoughts and in interpersonal communications.
On the furthest headland a pouring of light. Here a rousing of dark cloud. My body is this world. Waves break and arches spark. There is rain falling in the four directions but here, in eternity, my silver beach shines. The blessing of vision holds my sun, even as the golden serpent weaves her tides.
Painted on ‘Australia Day’ 2022
A plein-air painting of the rocky bluff ‘Jerrywerri’ at Callala Bay, also known as 'Red Rock'. The significance of the ‘headland’ is benign and protective, a nodal point of communion and shelter, an enfolding crease in a relentless sweep of sea and sand. It has long been a fold of benevolence dividing the boisterous waters of Callala Bay and a tranquil sandy cove backed by a forest of ancient banksias – an age old haven for the sea people of these parts. This painting is a blending of meaning and myth and hints at the likelihood of a catastrophic reshaping of ancient foreshores due to sea level rise.

Although the native bee is no bigger than a fly, it is an important provider of honey. Once the nest is found the sugar bag is eagerly devoured—wax, honey, pupae, dead bees, ants and all. The stick which is used to pry the sugar bag from the tree is thrown in the fire, and by this simple act the spirits of the bees return to the heavens, the Paradise of the Spirits, where they stay until Mayra, the wind of spring, breathes life into the flowers again. Then the bees return to the Paradise of Earth and gather honey to fill the bellies of mankind.

A dark wedge, paradigm of distance, divides the credo, touches the tip of cultural sensitivity, mimics the steeple. Its corner points to the flower of indigenous knowledge, symbolised by a leaf which is also an eye. Beyond the facade of resistance is the impenetrable citadel; a sacred hill. “The medieval Rosicrucians speak of the Elixir of Life as ‘a fiery water, a watery fire, a current which flows like water’. The alchemical water had the power to dissolve and animate inert matter, to resurrect the dead, and to wash blackness into whiteness. Water was believed to be the soul of all substances.
Mercurius stands at the beginning and end: He is the Prima Materia; as Dragon he devours himself and as Dragon he dies, to rise again as the Lapis Stone. He is the play of colours in the peacock’s tail and the division into four elements. He is the hermaphrodite that was in the beginning, that splits into the classical brother-sister duality and is reunited in the Coniunctio, to appear once again at the end in the radiant form of the Lumen Novum, the Stone. He is metallic yet liquid, matter yet spirit, cold yet fiery, poison and yet healing draught – a symbol uniting all opposites.“

‘THE TELLING’
During the torrent, when water thunders down the clefts, rounded boulders tumble downstream, sometimes to wedge in split rocks or in the forks of trees. Now the clear pools gleam, the contours of their confessions clearly visible.
This is a painting about the atom. There was a mirror that seemed to hold the sun. There are writings – an extraction of symbols from the sky. There is the effect of catharsis – its furious deceptions and dramatic overflows.

Here the sacramental imagery of the Eucharist is intermingled with representations of the Australian bush. Bread and wine motifs refer to the Easter ritual in which the body and blood of Christ are consecrated. Cycles of transformation are always actualised through sacrifice – surrender of something for the sake of something else – and this work is an allegory of the endless cycle of breakdown and renewal of the bush.

Wild river,
over and over,
the sound of white.
Reeds and river
weaving the mist together.
Each rock in the stream
has its own sound.
A ‘soundscape’ of rain and thunder, water interacting with rock and plants, and mingling with birdsong.
This painting attempts to portray the sound of water in an ecological context - the way the geography of the world itself makes sound. There is something elemental, and powerful, and pure, in the sound of a wild river flowing. The sounds do not exist in isolation, but in conjunction. In this work - an attentive description with a touch of synaesthesia* - the elements of the ‘geophony’ are placed in strategic resonance with one another.
* someone with synaesthesia may hear colour or see sound

“On the one hand, emotion is the alchemical fire whose warmth brings everything into existence and whose heat burns all superfluities to ashes. Water is the fluid element; it moves from place to place endlessly, permeating the habitat or vaporized by a merciless sun. Crises follow crises in the life of water. There is no resting place for a molecule so blessed!
The mediaeval Rosicrucians speak of the elixir of life as ‘a fiery water, a watery fire, a current which flows like water’. At the centre of the universe is a fountain. Water was believed to be the soul of all substances.
Water and space together created the idea of DEEP, but water signifies the lower deep, the fathomless silences, the deep unconscious.
When water rushes it's the activating principle. Water carves gorges on a single imperative – to go deeper.

“On the slope of the bank, angels fashion their robes of wool in pastures of steel and of emerald.
Meadows of flame spring up to the summit of the knoll.
On the left the compost of the ridge is stamped down by all the murderers and all the battles, and all the disastrous clamours spin their curve. Behind the ridge at the right the path of pearls, of progress.
And, while the band at the top of the picture is formed of the twirling and rebounding murmur of the conches of seas and of human nights, The flowery fragrance of the stars and of the sky and of the rest descends opposite the bank, like a basket, - against our face, and makes the abyss sweet-smelling and blue below.”

The Bowerbird can throw his voice and imitate the sounds of people and other birds; things which aren’t there. This painting is an allegory centred around the motif of the habitat: habitat as the habit of concealment and acquisition. The fragmented assonance of dancing shapes across the composition alludes to contents poised in the ‘bowers of consciousness’. The Aboriginal people called the bowerbird the ‘ghost bird’ because it often collects bones for its bower. In my painting the bird is whispering to the wind.

Nature is not linear: It is a loop of eternal returns, a locus of regenerative power. Nature breathes colour through its heaving or resting forms – it is the primal essence of poetic function. Spirit is the conduit of light and creates colour.

Listen too,
How every pause is filled with under-notes,
Clear, silver, icy, keen, awakening tones,
Which pierce the sense, and live within the soul,
As the sharp stars pierce winters crystal air,
And gaze upon themselves within the sea.

I was playing with a macro lens on my iPhone and lay down behind a blade of grass to enlarge the sky. A small lizard appeared, glistening and dangerous, and the shadows of enormous leaves eclipsed the moon. Scissor like thorns and armoured ants cut off my escape and as I turned immense crystalline grains toppled and I fell into a well that must have been the nipped off stalk of a severed flower. A long time later I returned to my world and the immense solitude of Microscopia evaporated in a breeze.'Golden' flow acrylics on cradled wood panel.

At the cave site with those flowers that bloom all night I wept to see the fruit fall as the tide of summer lit the stones. It was way too hot but there was still water dripping at the back of the cave. Somehow the heat cut the atmosphere, like a blade cutting a line. That line was a new rule, a new banishment, a new edge. My trees could do nothing against the hot wind but the mosses were a cool pillow for my head. I dreamt of the god tunnel that connects me to all women and it was there, in the dream, that I met the snake. Amongst rocks that had turned to glass in the heat, the serpent, descended from niches in the rock and already a part of my memoir, slithered into the river. It was then I realised my eyes were open.

Existence flickers at the edge of chaos. In my dark heaven someone moved. I saw a cloaked silhouette move from right to left. In the land of rivers and boulders the colours are spectral across all auras. There is a red giant who seems about to throw fire – he advances into my valley and the little gremlin figure scratched on the rock goes with him. The red giant is the fire bringer, his hound a water dragon - and an eye is in his thirsty heart.
A fractured landscape with river, boulders, trees and impending presences - a dream premonition of Mephistophelian times.

Notes: The Red Giant, a mythical man called the ‘Fire Thrower’, is the dealer of chaos and destruction. On the left side of the painting is a cleft – the unknown has hemmed me in. Coming from the right is the red giant, fire thrower, the harbinger of chaos. Between this advancing Titan and the chasm where everything falls away into nothing, are deep pools and rapids where the great python resides. He is represented by the two flows of water spouting from the waterfall, a shaft of power (these serpents always linger around rainbows). I think the red man has an ally – the covid virus – its image etched on a white stone in the bottom right corner. Look at the numbers! When and if I sign this work it will have those numbers inscribed.
Tumbled boulders seem to defy gravity and in the sky a stirring breeze presages rain. The outflung momentums of the composition are gathered in by the warm red boulders reflected in a cool mountain stream. Here the paradox of transience within timelessness is expressed in shade tree, flowing water, fleeting wind and immobile rock.

I am a diver into the deep, angling for mysterious clues to the undersea where anything might dwell. Subtle gestures spin this painting into the bipolar frame – one side is calm with abandoned boats (that might well be relics cast by the tide); the other side is in spirited motion around the Ichthys (hooked and dragged from the sea). In psychology, water symbolizes the depths of the unconscious, and fish symbolize fertility, feelings, creativity, rebirth, good luck, transformation, health, abundance, serenity, intelligence, happiness, strength, and endurance. Connecting us with the water element, Ichthys represents the deeper awareness of the unconsciousness or higher self.

Looking into the flower I saw the many appellations of love fiercely standing, demanding attention. Looking out of the flower I saw you - Wonderment - your shining stars, your fierce light.
Once the thorn has removed the thorn, both are thrown away. Once we have forgotten, no other freedom is available to us, save the freedom to remember again.
No matter which cultural or professional background we come from or through which lens of science or spirituality we watch our story. No matter where we look for guidance or which mentor, teacher, therapist or healer we follow. They all point to the same thorn. After that, it is all up to us how far from the pointer we can look.
It is until when we come back to our body that we notice the pain of the thorn, a familiar chronic uncomfortableness. The sharper our senses get, the more uncomfortable the thorn feels. We play around with it for a while, changing our position to see if we can feel more in ease, we keep looking at it from different angles and remember all the life stories we have made with this thorn.
And one day, with all the courage, trust and love we have gained along the way, we pull the thorn out, now, it hurts more than ever. But this time, instead of blaming ourselves or the thorn, we keep attending to our wound till it heals.

“The river is in all places at once, at its source and where it flows into the sea, at the waterfall… at the rapids, in the ocean, in the mountains, everywhere at once - for the river there is only the present moment and not the shadow of the future. The river’s many sounds suggest the sounds of all living things, and the flow of the river, as well as the fact that its water perpetually returns, suggests the nature of time.”

The clear notes of the king parrot resound through the mountain chasm at dawn with background melody of trickling stream and softly rustling leaves. This is a painting about music and light.

The tears of the forest are my tears, rising and falling, never the same; reflections of things that made me cry. I paint the trees yet see myself reflected – the hollows and cavities, the deep stirrings – and high above, fading celebrations and fleeting trepidations.

Rain, towering through trees
wets the captive atmosphere of the night
so that veins in the stone conduct presence
to the edge of earliest life where the
dissolved and the crystallized
barely escape from the mouth of the ground.

seen through the slit of a serpents eye.
A room resting in a vast bed of purple cloud
hoses me with a tip made of red hot diamonds.
I glow -
making a wing
out of what must have been a deep, fatal fin
black enough to pierce a cage
bleached not by me
but by a dream of what is not me…

sunshine grew

knife-tips held between blades that cut the sky

Realities mingle as time seems to pause at the Winter Solstice, which was when this picture was painted. The bird (native pigeon) symbolizes prophecy and its song (a low thrumming ooom oom) calls forth the sun.

“Where she lay at first blew white sand fine as bone dust, then leaves thick and black as primeval nectar bloomed from the whispering dune. Their smell encased her dreams in the sound of clandestine shaded water, the wild shoulders of waterfalls singing in the cool forest”. Ramyana Reeves

The sun is pricked, and fire rains from the skies – prophecy of sacred mountain.
This is a story painting. On the right, the ARRIVAL - a ship, a church, a torrent. On the left - WHITEOUT, cultural erasure.

“A seed is a mystery. It is both beginning and end, life and death, nothing and everything. In my painting the deep earth glows where a dream awakens and makes a new life in the sun. From the stars comes life, and when the clock turns the seed opens, thrusting up into yielding clay, shooting through the witch-hazel* darkness into dazzling extra-terrestrial light. You must not forget how water awakens the seed, nourishes the florae, and is sweetened in the fruit of trees.”

“On the one hand, emotion is the alchemical fire whose warmth brings everything into existence and whose heat burns all superfluities to ashes. But on the other hand, emotion is the moment when steel meets flint and a spark is struck forth, for emotion is the chief source of consciousness.

I was playing with a macro lens on my iPhone and lay down behind a blade of grass to enlarge the sky.

Paraphrased from Hermann Hesse ‘Siddhartha’

The clear notes of the king parrot resound through the mountain chasm at dawn with background melody of trickling stream and softly rustling leaves. The first rays of sunlight quiver in the morning dew and illuminate leaf and stone. The language of abstraction invites multiple readings whilst the motifs intersect at liminal scales and junctures. This is a painting about music and light.

“We constantly drift between the object and its demystification, powerless to render its wholeness. For if we penetrate the object, we liberate it but we destroy it; and if we acknowledge its full weight, we respect it, but we restore it to a state which is still mystified.”
Roland Barthes
